What to Do if Your Car is Damaged During Shipping

Shipping a vehicle can be a convenient and efficient way to move your car across states or even across the country. However, just like with any transportation process, there’s always a slight risk that your vehicle could sustain damage during transit. While most car shipping experiences go smoothly, it’s important to know what to do if something goes wrong. Understanding your rights, the role of auto transport insurance, and how to file car shipping claims is key to effective damage resolution.

Inspect Your Vehicle Thoroughly at Pickup and Delivery

The most important step in protecting yourself begins before your car even leaves your driveway. Reputable car transporters perform a vehicle inspection report at pickup, often called a Bill of Lading. This is a detailed record of your car’s condition prior to loading. It’s your responsibility to be present (or to designate someone trustworthy) to review this report carefully and make sure all existing scratches, dents, and other imperfections are accurately noted.

Once your vehicle is delivered, don’t rush through the final inspection. Examine the car in good lighting and compare its condition to the initial inspection report. Look for new dents, scratches, broken parts, or anything that seems off. Make sure these are noted on the final delivery report. If you notice damage that wasn’t there before, do not sign the final document until the issue is recorded by the driver. Your signature confirms the car was delivered in acceptable condition—so never sign blindly.

    Take Photos and Document Everything

Documentation is your best defense in the case of a damage dispute. Take clear, time-stamped photos of your vehicle before shipping and after delivery. Include close-ups of any damage, as well as wide shots that show the vehicle’s overall state. If possible, record a short video walkaround. Keep all paperwork related to the shipment, including the original quote, the Bill of Lading, emails, and payment receipts. The more organized your records, the easier it will be to pursue a resolution.

    Contact the Transport Company Immediately

As soon as you notice damage, contact the transport company to report the issue. Most companies have procedures for filing car shipping claims, and they should guide you through the process. Be prepared to provide documentation, photos, and a detailed description of the damage. It’s best to do this within 24 hours of delivery to avoid disputes over when the damage occurred.

Review the Carrier’s Auto Transport Insurance

All professional auto transport companies are required to carry auto transport insurance to protect your vehicle during transit. However, the extent of this coverage can vary significantly. Some policies may only cover specific types of damage or have deductibles that you’re responsible for. Review the insurance certificate provided by the carrier before shipping your car, and ask questions about what is and isn’t covered. In some cases, your personal auto insurance may also offer additional protection.

If the carrier’s insurance policy covers the damage, you’ll typically file a claim through them. If the carrier disputes the damage or refuses to cooperate, you may need to escalate the issue.

Escalating the Claim and Legal Options

If you’re not satisfied with the carrier’s response or if they deny the claim unfairly, consider contacting the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) or the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to file a complaint. You can also work with your own insurance company, especially if your policy includes comprehensive coverage during shipping.

In extreme cases where communication breaks down and you’re facing significant losses, legal action may be necessary. Consult with an attorney experienced in transportation law, especially if the value of the damage is high.

    Choosing a Reliable Transport Company

The best way to avoid dealing with damage claims is to choose a reputable auto transport company. Read reviews, check their licensing with the FMCSA, and ensure they have sufficient insurance coverage. A good company will not only take better care of your vehicle but will also make the resolution process smoother in case anything goes wrong.

While vehicle damage during transport is rare, it can happen. Knowing how to handle the situation is crucial for a successful damage resolution. By conducting thorough inspections, documenting your car’s condition, understanding auto transport insurance, and filing timely car shipping claims, you can protect your investment and ensure your vehicle is restored to its proper condition with minimal hassle. Preparation is key—and a little diligence can go a long way in securing your peace of mind. If your car has to be scrapped, look for a company for buying scrap cars and take care of your windscreens.
